What Is the DoorDash Alcohol Delivery Certification?
For a US Dasher there is no certificate to buy and nothing to upload. The "certification" is DoorDash's own in-app compliance module, and it only applies in the states DoorDash chooses. Everything below comes from DoorDash's published Dasher pages, not from gig-work blogs.
What DoorDash Actually Requires
- Age and ID: Dasher Central states the rule plainly: "Must be 21+ years of age and have a valid driver's license to deliver orders containing alcohol." Treat 21 with a valid license as the floor.

- State extras: the Help Center says that "in certain states, Dashers must complete a compliance module, possess a delivery permit (to be issued by DoorDash), and/or undergo an additional background check." DoorDash issues that permit. It is not a document you buy from a training provider.
- DoorDash contacts you: "DoorDash will notify you when you need a delivery permit or must undergo an added background check to be eligible to deliver alcohol." It never lists which states trigger which requirement.
Pain Point: Blogs Say You Need a Certificate First
Gig-work blogs still claim every Dasher must hold a certification before alcohol orders appear. DoorDash's own position where a state imposes no module requirement is the opposite: "in states with no compliance module requirement, we still encourage Dashers to take the compliance module to help ensure you are equipped to make a safe and compliant alcohol delivery." Encouraged, not mandatory, is the precise status. Any article handing you a confident state-by-state table is filling in a blank DoorDash left empty.
Who Can Deliver Alcohol on DoorDash?
Alcohol is optional, and declining the category costs you nothing elsewhere. DoorDash puts it directly: "Alcohol delivery is optional, and opting out of this type of delivery will not impact your ability to receive other orders from restaurants, grocery stores, retail partners, and more."
- You must be 21 or older with a valid government-issued ID, and merchants will ask to see it at pickup.
- You choose each order. Alcohol orders are flagged as containing restricted items, and you can decline before accepting or cancel before pickup.
- No drinking before or while dashing, and no alcohol within reach of the driver during transport.
- Opting out is always available in your Dasher preferences. If the control is missing for your area, DoorDash's instruction is to call 855-431-0459.
How to Enable Alcohol Delivery on DoorDash (Step-by-Step)
There is no application form. The whole process lives inside the Dasher app.
Step 1: Meet the Baseline
Be 21 or older and hold a valid driver's license or other government-issued ID. Keep it on you: "have your ID ready to present to the Merchant when picking up the order."
Step 2: Check Your Dasher Preferences
Open the Dasher app, go to the Account tab and check your Dasher preferences. Make sure alcohol offers are switched on. Opting out never affects your other orders, so nothing is lost by leaving it on and judging each offer on its pay.
Step 3: Complete the Compliance Module (If Your State Requires It)
Where DoorDash requires training, the training is DoorDash's. The module runs inside the app and is reached through the Account tab. It ends in a test: "Dashers must show that they understand these guidelines by passing a test at the end of the module before they will be offered opportunities to deliver alcohol." The subject matter is practical: how to check a valid ID, the typical signs of a fraudulent one, and the legal penalties for delivering to an underage consumer.
Step 4: Wait for DoorDash to Contact You About Anything Extra
In some states a DoorDash-issued delivery permit or an added background check applies. DoorDash says it will notify you when either is needed. There is nothing to request and nothing to submit.
Step 5: Accept Your First Alcohol Order
The offer screen flags orders that contain restricted items, including alcohol. Accept or decline each one. Once accepted, the app walks you through the pickup, the two ID checks and the handoff.
What DoorDash Does Not Say About the Module
- No upload step for US Dashers. DoorDash publishes no portal, form or address for filing a certificate obtained elsewhere. The module is completed in the app.
- No published cost. Gig-work blogs routinely describe it as free. No DoorDash-owned page says so, in either direction.
- No published expiry. DoorDash does not state whether the module must be retaken. Read the module screen in your own app instead of trusting a secondhand number.
Compliance Module Not Showing? Troubleshooting
The most common complaint in Dasher forums is that the alcohol module never appears. DoorDash does not publish a troubleshooting page, but its own documentation explains most cases:
- Your state may not require it. DoorDash only mandates the module "in certain states". Elsewhere it is encouraged, not required, and alcohol offers do not depend on it.
- You may be opted out. Check the alcohol setting in your Dasher preferences under the Account tab. If the control is missing for your area, call 855-431-0459.
- Your market may not have alcohol on the platform yet. The alcohol comes from licensed merchants, not from DoorDash, so offers only exist where a licensed store has switched on delivery in your zone.
- A permit or background check may be pending. Where a state requires a DoorDash-issued permit or an additional background check, DoorDash says it notifies you. Until then there is nothing to submit.
- An outside certificate will not fix it. DoorDash publishes no way for a US Dasher to upload a third-party certificate, so buying one does not switch the module or alcohol offers on.
Why Alcohol Offers Differ From One Market to the Next
There is no permanent national map of DoorDash alcohol delivery, and DoorDash does not publish one. What its documentation does establish is that the alcohol comes from a licensed business rather than from DoorDash itself. Its merchant-facing guidance tells store owners to "understand the local rules and requirements relevant to your business, including whether your state requires an alcohol delivery certificate." That certificate question is aimed at the licensed seller, not at the person driving.

Delivering the Order: ID Checks, Sobriety and Refusals
DoorDash requires two separate checks at the door and describes both. The Dasher must "scan a valid form of ID, perform a physical examination of the ID, and assess the recipient for any signs of intoxication," and "only hand over the alcohol after having successfully completed the two ID checks."
Check 1: Scan the ID in the App
The app prompts the scan before the handoff, then asks you to confirm the ID matches the person standing there: tap Verify, or tap Can't verify and follow the instructions. DoorDash documents that prompt but does not describe the app blocking a handoff by itself, so the judgement stays with you.
Check 2: Inspect the ID Physically
- Photo and physical description match the recipient in front of you.
- Expiration date and date of birth both check out.
- No signs of tampering, split lamination or forgery. Severely damaged IDs should not be accepted.
- In states that require a signature, the app prompts you to collect it before the alcohol changes hands.
When You Must Refuse
Refusal is a duty rather than a judgement call. DoorDash instructs Dashers to refuse when:
- No one answers the door. "Alcohol cannot, under ANY circumstances, be left unattended."
- The recipient shows signs of intoxication: glassy eyes, the smell of alcohol, an unsteady gait or slurred speech.
- The recipient is underage, or appears underage but presents an ID suggesting otherwise, or is of legal age but surrounded by people who plainly are not.

Is Alcohol Delivery Worth It on DoorDash?
The Upside
DoorDash's own pitch is modest but specific: alcohol lets Dashers "deliver high-value orders for more earnings" and is "another opportunity to maximize their earnings." It publishes no separate alcohol pay rate, bonus or tip multiplier for US Dashers. The one place DoorDash pays extra for alcohol training is Canada, where a submitted provincial certificate earns a reward in the Earnings tab. No US equivalent exists.
The Costs
- Time at the door: a scan, a physical ID inspection, a sobriety assessment and, in some states, a signature on every drop.
- Return trips: if nobody is home or the recipient fails a check, the order goes back to the store. DoorDash pays return pay, but it still costs time.
- Real downside: a failed compliance check can mean a citation, fines and deactivation.
The Honest Answer
Alcohol is worth opting into if you already work retail and grocery orders in a market where alcohol is live, and not worth chasing if it means idling for offers that rarely appear. DoorDash lets you decline any individual alcohol offer before accepting it, so opting in and judging each offer on its pay is the low-risk way to find out.

Be exact about this. No DoorDash-owned page reviewed states that DoorDash requires, accepts, recognises or endorses any third-party or national alcohol-delivery certificate for US Dashers. Its US pages do not discuss third-party certificates at all, and silence is not acceptance. Nothing DoorDash publishes gives an outside course a role in your eligibility, the speed of your approval, or which offers you see. An outside certificate is also not a license: it cannot satisfy a legal requirement a state imposes on you.
The Canada Exception
DoorDash does require an outside certificate in one place, and the contrast is instructive. In five Canadian provinces, Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, Manitoba and Saskatchewan, Dashers must complete a province-specific, government-recognised programme such as ProServe or Serving It Right, then upload the certificate through the Dasher Account tab.
