California RBS: the one state where the exam is the state's own

Is RBS training mandatory in California?

Yes, since 1 July 2022, under Assembly Bill 1221 and Assembly Bill 82. It applies to on-premises alcohol servers and their managers at more than 56,000 ABC-licensed businesses.

What exactly does the law require?

Three separate steps, and missing any one leaves you uncertified. You must register in the ABC's RBS Portal, take training from an ABC-authorised RBS training provider, and pass the ABC's own Alcohol Server Certification exam with a score of 70 per cent or higher. The exam belongs to ABC — no provider can issue it for them.

What are the deadlines?

Certification within 60 days of your first date of employment, and the exam within 30 days of your confirmed training. Once you pass, the certification is valid for three years and you must recertify before it expires.

Can this course certify me for RBS?

No. Certification Experts is not an ABC-authorised RBS training provider, so this course cannot register you in the RBS Portal or put you in front of the ABC exam. Use an authorised provider for the credential. This course is preparation and refresher material — the carding technique, altered-ID detection, impairment recognition and refusal practice that the ABC exam tests — and nothing here replaces the RBS Portal step.
