Who has to be trained in Rhode Island?

More people than you would guess. Under RIGL 3-7-6.1 the requirement covers everyone who sells or serves alcoholic beverages, anyone supervising those who do, anyone whose job description includes checking identification for an alcohol purchase — and valet parking staff. It applies to Class B, C, D, J, N and P licences.

What is the deadline and the pass mark?

Certified training must be completed within 60 days of the start of employment, and you have to score at least 75 per cent. Servers must then be recertified every three years.

What does the state require of the course itself?

The Department of Business Regulation decides which programmes are eligible for certification. A qualifying course runs two to four hours and must cover the physiological effects of alcohol, the legal requirements, detecting identification fraud, and refusal techniques — and the Department must approve the testing procedures as well as the curriculum.

Is this course DBR-certified?

No. Certification Experts is not on Rhode Island's certified list, so this course cannot produce the certificate your Class B or Class D employer has to hold on file. It does teach the four things the DBR curriculum is built around, which is why it works as preparation for the certified programme and as refresher training between three-year recertifications.
