Does West Virginia require alcohol server training?

No. There is no statewide requirement that servers complete a training programme or hold a state-issued server credential. The Alcohol Beverage Control Administration regulates licensees; it does not certify individual servers.

I have seen sites advertising a West Virginia 'server permit' — what is that?

Proceed carefully. A mandatory alcohol server permit, with a sixty-day deadline after initial employment, has been put before the West Virginia Legislature in past sessions, and that proposed language circulates online as though it were current law. It is not. If a site tells you West Virginia issues a compulsory server permit, confirm it with the ABCA before you pay anyone for one.

Who carries the risk if service goes wrong?

The licensee. West Virginia enforcement runs through the licence, which is why a bar owner in Morgantown or Charleston will insist on trained staff even though the state has not told them to. Your certificate protects your employer's licence as much as your own job.

What does this course cover?

The practical core: reading a driver's licence at speed, recognising an altered or borrowed ID, judging intoxication from behaviour rather than counting rounds, and refusing a sale in language that de-escalates. It is independent responsible-service training, not an ABCA credential — West Virginia does not issue one.
